Frequently Asked Questions
How long does untreated timber last in the ground?
Untreated timber typically lasts 8–12 years, depending on soil conditions, moisture, and airflow.
Can I use treated timber in the garden?
We don’t recommend it. Many treated timbers contain chemicals like CCA, which can leach into soil and may be harmful to your health. For more information, visit the New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority website.
How do I make my timber garden beds last longer?
Ensure good drainage, avoid constant moisture buildup, and consider using Shou Sugi Ban or applying a natural oil like linseed oil to help protect the timber.
What is Shou Sugi Ban?
Shou Sugi Ban is a traditional Japanese technique of charring the surface of timber to create a natural protective layer. It resists rot, pests, and moisture, and when done correctly, can last 50+ years.
What type of timber do you use?
We use high quality, untreated New Zealand timber, typically including Japanese cedar, redwood, and macrocarpa. We also offer pine as an option.
Do I need a greenhouse to grow successfully?
No, but a greenhouse helps extend your growing season, protect plants, and improve yields. It also helps seeds germinate faster and produce bigger, stronger seedlings, especially outside of spring and summer when extra soil warmth is needed.
What tools will I need?
Basic tools like a drill, measuring tape, level, and a spade.
Do your garden beds come pre cut or assembled?
Our garden beds are available as kitsets or can be fully installed and filled with soil for you.
What do I get with a digital guide?
Instant download includes step-by-step instructions, material lists, measurements, diagrams, and photos.
Do you ship across New Zealand?
Yes, smaller products are shipped nationwide. For larger kitset garden beds and compost stations, we can organise delivery with you. Pricing varies depending on size and timber weight, so it is arranged on a case by case basis.
Can I customise the size of my garden bed?
Yes, our designs can be adjusted to suit your space. We also offer standard sizes.
Do I need DIY experience to build your projects?
No, our guides are beginner friendly and easy to follow.
